Introduction: In the past half century, women have played increasingly prominent roles in the U.S. labor force, as workers, managers, business owners and executives. Today, there are more women in leadership positions than at any time in this country’s history.  Women are making history and changing the face of this nation’s economy.  Today, women hold over 51% of all management and professional positions.  Fourteen percent of the military are women.  There are 104 women who are elected members of Congress – the highest ever. About 29 percent of America’s business owners are women.According to the National Association of Corporate Directors, companies that have women on their boards generate value to their corporations by broadening market vision, enhancing board dynamics, inspiring female stockholders and improving corporate reputation. What are the characteristics of these successful women? How did they get to where they are today? What are the social and economic implications of this increased participation of women in labor force and business? What does the future hold?
